We’ve already seen plenty of alleged screenshots of BBM running on Android and we’ve long expected the service to launch on both iOS and Android smartphones at some point. We believe RIM wants to make that step even more now that it’s open to new options to help turn the company around.

A source on Wednesday sent us several new images of Blackberry Messenger for Android version 0.8.87 running SitSLIP debugger 1.3.45 on a device with a 320 x 240-pixel resolution display, the same used in the HTC Wildfire. We’re told that RIM plans to include BBM for Android and iOS in its Mobile Fusion package also, which was introduced last year for enterprise users.

Are they legit? Our source says so, but late last year, Bla1ze from CrackBerry.com noticed that the font in earlier photographs is native to BlackBerry devices, which meant it seemed out of place on an Android smartphone. We asked our source that question this time around and, unfortunately, all we were told is that he or she is not a developer on the project and is simply working on fixing bugs.

The source also said that BBM for Android is on schedule to launch this year, although he or she wasn’t clear about the iOS launch date.

It’s long been rumoured that BlackBerry Messenger will eventually be released for iOS and Android, but one analyst now believes that’s very unlikely. Jefferies’ Peter Misek predicts that RIM will abandon its plans to develop BBM apps for competitors’ devices in favour of “direct competition” with them.

RIM had also been developing enterprise support technology for Android and iOS phones, which would allow companies to monitor and control employees’ phones from a central console, and Misek, based on checks with his sources and an interview with recently-appointed CEO Thorsten Heins, believes work on this will slow down as he seeks to change the company’s short term strategy. Misek believes RIM will underperform this financial year, and has slashed his previous target on shares from $17 to $15.

BlackBerry Messenger, or BBM, popularised the concept of instant messaging on smartphones, but has since faced stiff competition from cross platform alternatives such as WhatsApp, as well as Apple’s equivalent for iOS devices, iMessage. BBM was also the focus of media attention during last summer’s riots, and blamed for allowing the easy co-ordination of looting.

A few days ago, we caught a glimpse at the first spy shots of the BlackBerry Messenger or BBM app for Android users running on a device. Some more screens of the app running what appears to be a different device have surfaced as well. The other screens show some of the same views that we saw previously, but it also includes a couple new views.
TechnoBuffalo was sent some screen shots from a source and the source added a bit of background to go with the screen shots that add a little credibility to things. The source claims to work for RIM. The phone the screenshots show looks very rough, and there is apparently a reason for it. The phone is a dev unit that RIM whipped up and the buttons on the front are just stuck on according to the source. The source also said that in the leaked screens from earlier in the week, the Nicole account seen is the default test account for BBM testing. The images could still be bogus keep the salt handy. Still, the new shots are clearly from a different device than the other and have a different background image. What do you think are these real or fake?

You might remember that there was talk awhile back about RIM’s well-known instant-messaging client, BBM, would be making its way to Android and eventually iOS. The first signs of such an app have just surfaced, showing the standard BlackBerry Messenger profile page, but not much else. The app icon doesn’t look great right now, but BBM for Android is still in testing (albeit late stages, according to the source). Native Android notifications are reportedly working well, but the full extent of BBM features aren’t quite known for sure.

Even though I’m a big BlackBerry fan, I don’t use BBM that much, and see most of the excitement surrounding it as a relic of a time when instant messaging aside from SMS was nonexistant. Read/recieved notifications are nice and all, and I could see how shared calendars, pictures, and lists within groups could be useful, but only if all of your friends own a BlackBerry, which obviously isn’t the case anymore. Google Talk meets my instant messaging needs much better exactly because it’s cross-platform, and BBM may find some renewed use if some of my friends without BlackBerry devices could get in touch with me through it. That said, if RIM wants to keep BBM as a sellable feature, they’re going to have to go cross-platform; they’ve already announced that their enterprise products are headed that way, and the PlayBook will echo the sentiment with its Android app player. Projects that leverage BlackBerry Messenger (like BBM Music) might not be particularly attractive when they’re limited to RIM smartphones, but if that market were suddenly opened up to a wider range of phones, devs may find a reason to make their apps BBM-connected with the available tools. While I doubt that the taste of BBM on Android will be enough to get owners to make their next phone a BlackBerry, RIM may still make a bit of coin if they charge for the core BBM app on other platforms.

We may end up seeing BlackBerry Messenger for Android before 2012 hits, which means a preview may be in order at BlackBerry DevCon in a few short weeks. Anyone excited to give it a shot, or are the multitude of existing cross-platform instant messaging clients enough to keep you connected?

The infamouse BlackBerry Messenger app android had been seen on an Android phone. Now, according to various sources this has been rumored in the past and nothing has come of it. However, now there have been much clearer images taken showing BlackBerry Messenger running on an Android phone. The phone pictured here is however still being shielded from being revealed. It makes sense for BlackBerry to launch their messenger service on other platforms as their BlackBerry handsets are not doing so well these days in competition with Android and iOS. It is completely possible that this photo is a fake or an early prototype. We will have to see if this feature ever come to life, but if it did would you use it?
