‘Deny Christ or Die,’ Boko Haram Tells Christian Woman

Boko Haram Tells Christian Woman

A Christian woman was recently held by Muslim terrorists in Nigeria and ordered to convert to Islam or die. The 19-year-old Hajja told Reuters she was held by Boko Haram and told to renounce Christianity or perish. Members of Boko Haram threatened to slit her throat if she did not give up her faith in Christ.

She described the moment a knife was held to her throat, and her life threatened.

“They told me I must become a Muslim, but I refused again and again,” Hajja said. “They were about to slaughter me, and one of them begged me not to resist and just before I had my throat slit, I relented. They put a veil on me and made me read from the Koran.”

Boko Haram made Hajja a domestic slave. She was forced to clean and prepare meals for the terrorist militia. Hajja’s testimony of captivity included Boko Haram using her as bait to lure civilian Nigerians working with the military into death traps. She witnessed Boko Haram militia slashing the throats of captured civilians.

Hajja later managed to escape from her captors. She told reporters that it is hard for her to think about the ordeal.
“I can’t sleep when I think of being there,” she said. “If I cried, they beat me. If I spoke, they beat me.”

Boko Haram, which is translated into English as “Western education is sinful,” seeks to establish Sharia Islamic law into northern Nigeria. President Goodluck Jonathan, a professing Christian, has waged a military campaign against Boko Haram in an attempt to root them out, and has faced resistance from the group. Nigeria is divided into a Muslim majority north and a Christian south.

According to International Christian Concern (ICC), a Christian organization that records Christian persecution around the world, many girls in Muslim-majority areas of the country are being abducted and being forced to renounce their faith.

ICC also records on their website the testimony of a man named Habila Adamu, who was shot in the head after he refused to deny Christ, but miraculously survived.

“They want to ‘Islamitize’ Nigeria. That is why they are targeting Christians,” he told reporters. “They wanted me to deny Jesus. We are sinners! We are condemned criminals. We are supposed to die! But He took all these burdens! He paid for our debt! He died for us! Why can I not submit to Jesus? That is what I did. I stood for him!”

Nigeria Tops 5 Fastest-Growing Countries in the World

Nigeria Tops 5 Fastest-Growing Countries in the World

Using data from the International Monetary Fund and based on projected 2014 nominal GDP growth rates for the 50 largest economies in the world, Nigeria ranks number one as the fastest growing countries in the world. Such a good news for the country ranks one of the most corrupt nation in the world.

5. Peru, 5.7% GDP growth
Peru's been touted as one of South America's fastest-growing economies in years, and the country's economic strides have lifted it to become the 39th largest economy in the world, according to IMF data, adjusted for purchasing power parity. Even though the Peruvian government has backslid on some of its loftier economic growth projections for the future, this country still looks to be the pearl of South America going forward, and its place among the world's five fastest-growing countries has been built atop one dominant industry that's ignored its worldwide decline: mining.

Yanacocha gold mine, Peru. Source: Wikimedia Commons, user Elbuenminero.

However, the sector hasn't been as kind to investors this year as it has to Peru's economy. Peru's largest mining firm, Compania de Minas Buenaventura (NYSE: BVN ) , has seen its stock fall a whopping 70% on the year. Buenaventura's dealt with problems from a workers' strike back in October to plunging sales and earnings recently. However,JPMorgan Chase analysts opined after the company's third quarter results that the miner of gold and other metals could be due for a long-term turnaround by finishing several projects this year, including a manganese plant that should help to push down rising costs.

Several other major companies have stakes in Peru's dominant mining industry, includingVale (NYSE: VALE ) . Vale has sold off assets and cut back on investments recently to keep its profits rolling along in light of the mining industry's collapse, but the company hasn't sacrificed its stronghold in Peru. In fact, Peru is one of four countries that Vale's targeting with 85% of its mineral exploration, along with Canada, Australia, and Brazil. Considering Peru's growth outlook -- and the big role mining's played in its climb -- it looks like a smart move for Vale and its investors.

4. Bangladesh, 6% GDP growth
Bangladesh is the eighth largest country on the planet in terms of population, and that's helped the country climb into the ranks of the world's top 50 economies. But this country's growth has come behind the textile industry, as Bangladesh has emerged as a cheap labor source compared with the likes of traditional labor hotspot China.

However, this fast-growing country is nowhere near as friendly to investors as stable Peru is. Bangladesh is still navigating progress in its industries, and violence and political friction (including the recent opposition party's boycott of a coming general election) could threaten the country's thriving growth in the future. There's considerable potential for Bangladesh's economy if the country can implement successful economic and civic progress while strengthening trade ties with neighboring economic powers like India, but until such events happen -- and they're no certainty -- investors should stay cautious around a teetering state like this.

3. Philippines, 6% GDP growth
The Philippines, a member of the blossoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, has become a big player in the region recently because of its regional spats with power player China over control and influence in the South China Sea. However, this country's more than just an opponent for Asia's top economy: It's a growth story all on its own, and the Philippines has quietly risen to become the 31st largest economy in the world, ahead of developed nations such as Austria, Sweden, and Singapore. While the IMF projects the Philippines's economic growth to slow down to 5.5% in the years following 2014, this country's still on pace to emerge as a top player in fast-growing Asia.

However, the country's growth projection might not live up to its hype in the new year. The Philippines still suffers from poor infrastructure in many parts of the country, a hindrance to business and growth. Easy credit has also led to inflating housing and consumer prices.

However, the country's dominant business process outsourcing industry, or BPO, should keep on churning out growth for the Philippines. Many top BPO and IT firms operate out of the country, including Accenture (NYSE: ACN ) . Accenture targeted BPO as one of its key growth markets in its recent 10-K annual filing, and overall outsourcing revenue rose 7% year over year at the company in its most recent fiscal year. The Philippines' economy might not be sturdy enough to trust across every sector, but for Accenture and other BPO leaders, it's hard to pass up.

2. China, 7.3% GDP growth
It's hard to leave out China on a list like this, even with the country's fall from its double-digit economic growth of years past. Still, the country has ascended to the No. 2 spot among world economies behind only the USA, and between a major urbanization push, a growing middle class, and China's recent commitment in its recent Third Plenum economic conference to support private business and market forces, this world power looks to keep its growth churning along at a high rate.

Nanjing Road, Shanghai. Source: Wikimedia Commons, user Miaow Miaow.

That hasn't helped investors so much this year, particularly as Hong Kong's Hang Seng stock index has gained only around 2% year to date -- much of that from a recent rally in the past few months, considering the Hang Seng's losses earlier in 2013. Nonetheless, a few industries are ready to break out in a big way in China, with Internet and online business in particular well positioned to capitalize on the country's growing middle class.

Internet search engine Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU ) has been one of the top China stocks to post actual strong gains this year, jumping 60% since the start of 2013. While Baidu's been feeling pressure from smaller growing rivals, this company still controlled more than 61% of Chinese search engine traffic as of October. That's down more than two percentage points year over year, but considering Baidu's planned push overseas into Thailand in 2014, as well as its ambitions to move into fast-growing Indonesia, among other economies, this Chinese tech giant looks like a long-term winner and one of this growing economy's more promising plays for investors.

1. Nigeria, 7.4% GDP growth
Nigeria is the 30th largest economy in the world, according to the IMF, and like Bangladesh, it's heavily a result of its population: This country is the seventh most populous nation in the world and quickly is becoming a power player in Africa's greater economy. Oil and the energy sector, in particular, have fueled Nigeria's gains, with the Niger River delta a massive bastion of oil reserves. Despite the country's political instability and location in a socially unstable location of the globe, the country's leadership in Africa's oil sector has made it a hot target for the world's biggest oil majors.

However, several oil giants recently have looked to sell off assets in the region as Nigeria promotes domestic ownership of energy reserves. Chevron (NYSE: CVX ) sold three oil blocks for $900 million back in November, the latest of a string of sales from companies including Royal Dutch Shell and ConocoPhillips. Chevron's still the third-largest energy producer in the country, and the company has said it's committed to Nigeria, but a shift from foreign to domestic companies could be coming for this growing African energy giant.

Nonetheless, Nigeria's energy dominance is going nowhere. The country has considerable ground to make up before it can think about joining the ranks of more advanced emerging economies such as Brazil and China, butin the meantime, the country's oil and natural gas will be a friend to investors.

New computer virus 'secretly leaks data' through air

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Security researchers have developed malware that can capture secret data from a computer and hijack the soundcard to broadcast it to a nearby machine as a high-frequency sound inaudible to humans

Security researchers have developed malware that can capture keystrokes from a computer and hijack the soundcard to broadcast the data to a nearby machine as a high-frequency sound which cannot be heard by humans.
In extremely high-security environments it is common practice to create an “air gap” between PCs containing sensitive information and others which are connected to the internet, in order to prevent remote malicious attacks. This research proves that it would be possible to use computer speakers and microphones to bridge this gap and send sensitive information back to a remote attacker, which authors warned was a “considerable threat to computer security”.
In the proof-of-concept attack from Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics, researchers were able to use the built-in speakers and microphones of computers to transmit passwords and other data at a rate of 20 bits per second over a distance of almost 20 metres, allowing the malware to “secretly leak critical data to the outside world”.
“If we want to exploit a rigorously hardened and tested type of computing system or networks of this type of computing system, we have to break new ground,” said the paper.
Speakers and microphones are often overlooked in security planning, and by using frequencies outside the range of human hearing it is likely that such messages could escape detection even when they are beamed across an office full of staff.
Cunningly, the paper does not stop at transmitting audio from one computer to another, but aims to infect as many PCs as possible and create a mesh network to enable multi-hop communication. In this way the victim’s machine and the computer which transmits data back to the attacker via the internet do not have to be within audible range of each other.
Researchers made use of an existing communication protocol designed for underwater communication as the relatively complex TCP/IP stacks used to transmit data over the internet have too large an overhead in terms of additional bits that are wrapped around the content. Because electromagnetic waves are highly absorbed by seawater it is common to send and receive data acoustically in underwater applications.
The experiment used five Lenovo T400 laptops running Debian 7.1, and was performed in a standard computer lab with no particularly unusual audio characteristics.
Transmissions were sent at around 20kHz and were found to be totally inaudible to humans during the experiment. The paper suggests that this frequency could be even higher, to make it even less likely to be detected, but that this would reduce the broadcast range.
During the experiment the researchers were able to covertly log the keystrokes made by a user at one computer and broadcast them over audio through a chain of other computers until the message was eventually passed to a machine connected to the internet, and sent back to a malicious attacker.
“Alongside keystroke information it would also be possible to forward other security critical data such as private encryption keys or small-sized text files with classified information from the infected victim to the covert network,” said researchers.
“This data could be sent out periodically to maximize the likelihood of data extraction from the host and it could also be spread to different environments when the computing system is carried around.”
“We have shown that the establishment of covert acoustical mesh networks in air is feasible in setups with commonly available business laptops.”
Examples of malware that can bridge air gaps have been found in the wild, such as Flame, which used Bluetooth to download contact information from nearby devices. Iran was first discovered in 2012 and seemed to disproportionately infect machines in Iran, leading to a story in The Washington Post claiming that it had been developed by the NSA and CIA in order to slow Iran's nuclear weapons research.

"Lekki Wives" is the most talked about show in Nigeria.

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
With stories of adultery, betrayal, money flowing stream, the series "Lekki Wives" has become the most talked about TV show in Nigeria.
"Lekki Wives
Screenwriter and director of the series "Lekki Wives" Blessing Effiom Egbe shares spotlight into the most talked about show in Nigeria. This comedy takes place in one of the new chic suburbs of Lagos, is not only the brainchild of producers. She lifts the veil on the lives of the new rich in very select suburb of Lekki, secure area of large villas, where the writer and director Blessing Effiom Egbe lived for eight years.

Lekki Wives (Women Lekki), whose name is borrowed from Desperate Housewives, describes the obsession with social mobility in a country where the wealth from oil is far from having improved the lives of its 170 million inhabitants.

The series, which is perhaps what fascinates viewers watch "all the evil that people are willing to do for money," says Blessing Egbe.

"We pushed the envelope a bit. Were not trying to be nice," she told AFP.

show in Nigeria
Lekki Wives
Dressed in ultra-short dresses, perched on endless heels, made up outrageously, the five heroines, Cleopatra, Lovette, Peace, Miranda and Uju, succeed with their charms and enjoy without qualms of life of women-trophies Husband fortunate.

With the largest population and the continent's largest oil industry, Nigeria has experienced economic growth of 7% over the last decade, one of the highest rates in the world.

An innovative series

Yet poverty has worsened since 2004, acknowledged the government last year. The middle class has expanded, but the money is mostly concentrated in the hands of plutocrats at the top of society.

Intrigues Lekki Wives are "99%" inspired by true stories of people looking to join the elite, explains Egbe. The characters talk about their desires and emotional monologues in front of the camera.

Must pass a security gate to enter the residential complex Lekki, a district in full swing and the most coveted of Lagos.

Banks, hotels, shopping malls, huge churches along the road paved carefully. The buildings are new or under construction.

The houses resemble the American suburbs. Rents are astronomical: U.S. $ 24,000 per year for a studio (18,000 euros), it is often necessary to pay at once.

Mother of 3 children, Blessing Egbe, 37, knows the area where she moved there 8 years. These are people "who are desperate to be seen and go to wealthy," she said.

But it is sometimes a sham.

"You see a beautiful house, but inside, the rooms are empty or without electricity. Either the room is elegant and the rest of the house, there is nothing," she says.

"An address to Lekki is perhaps not quite a visa for America," but it is a lot of acceptable consolation jokes blogger Chigo Compere. A known history in Lagos reports the case of a man who can not afford housing in this affluent suburb, sleeping in his Range Rover parked in the streets of Lekki, the changing place every day to avoid being spotted by people.

The series is innovative because designers of films and television programs in Nigeria tend to avoid the realities of society, says the actress Kiki series Omeilli 29 years.

"Everyone knows what happens, but nobody wants this screen," says one who embodies Lovette, which maintains a set of expensive life with her lovers and extramarital affairs.

A scenario that crosses the boundaries of acceptable

The series is so popular that the actress is approached by fans on the streets like never before. "People recognize me because of my previous films, but never like this."

Blessing is amazed by the success of his series launched in April on the internet, then on DVD before the DSTV satellite chain starts to circulate each week.

"I thought it would appeal to the wealthy, but eventually that interests everyone."

This was discovered seller DVD market Obalende Lagos Theelar Uchenna: it remained out of stock for three months.

Yet the scenario crosses the boundaries of acceptable in a conservative society, divided equally between Christians and Muslims, and which the Muslim north is subject to Sharia law.

In one episode, a character is looking for a partner for sado-masochistic relationship.

Yet the series has so far not attracted protests from civil and religious authorities. But the second season intends to push the limits even further.

I hope I will not be driven (screens) after Season 2, "she said.

World leaders pay tribute to Nelson Mandela

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Jonathan, Obama, Cameron tributes to Mandela

The death on Thursday of South Africa's liberation leader and first democratic president Nelson Mandela triggered an unprecedented worldwide chorus of awed respect.

"He no longer belongs to us; he belongs to the ages," US President Barack Obama said, in a deliberate echo of an early tribute paid to Abraham Lincoln, the American leader who emancipated the slaves.

"We will not likely see the likes of Nelson Mandela again," said Obama, America's first black president, citing Mandela's release from prison as one of his own early political inspirations.

U.S. president, Barack Obama, ordered wave flags at half-staff at the White House and all public buildings until Monday evening,  and also added that Mandela "did more than what can be expected from any man "and wished his legacy continues to inspire humanity.

Nigerian President Jonathan, said “Mandela will always be remembered and honoured by all mankind as one of its greatest liberators, a wise, courageous and compassionate leader, and an icon of true democracy.”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted the "exemplary" of the South African president and Nobel Peace 1993 in his tributes

"Nobody as he did for the values and aspirations of both United Nations," Ban said in stressing his "moral strength" was "crucial" to end apartheid.

The death of Nobel Peace Prize was also lamented by U.S. presidents George W. Bush (2001-2009), who in 2002 was awarded the Medal of Freedom at the White House, and Bill Clinton (1993-2001), who argued that today the world has lost "one of the best human beings."

At last, science has defined 'booty call"

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

At last, science has defined "booty call, one night stand, jump offs or friends with benefits."
'booty call"

"As silly as it may seem, defining booty call, one-night stands, friends-with-benefits arrangements and other casual sex relationships is important for psychologists, who can't study relationships without defining them. That's why Peter Jonason, a psychologist at the University of Western Sydney in Australia, focused on these relationships in a new study, published Nov. 1 in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior." wrote Stephanie Pappas in a published article.

"There is such a range of relationships, and we tend to be loose in the terms we use to define and describe them," Jonason said.

Jonason wanted to provide definitions that offered insight into the functions of each of these relationships. People get involved with other people for many reasons: sex, companionship, love and even for a self-esteem boost. The results, that could also could also explain why people get involved in a booty-call relationship versus a one-night stand or long-term affair.

In the new research, Jonason surveyed 192 undergraduate students — 124 women and 68 men — at the University of West Florida. Each participant was asked to rank how likely booty calls, friends with benefits (people who have casual sex while remaining "just friends"), long-term relationships and one-night stands were to fulfill each of four functions: sexual gratification, social and emotional support, a "trial run" for a serious relationship and a placeholder to stave off boredom or to bide time until something better came along.

After this series of questions, the participants filled out a survey that made them match one relationship to one function. Next, they answered questions about their own attitudes toward sex and relationships in order to measure their individual comfort with and interest in casual sex.

The results, though limited by a college-student-only population, reveal that different relationships serve different functions. The predominate function of long-term relationships was social support, followed by being a trial run or a placeholder, with sex bringing up the rear.

Booty calls were primarily for sex, with placeholder coming in as the second function and trial run coming in third. Social support came in dead last.

Sex and placeholder tied for first as the main function of friends-with-benefits relationships, with trial run coming in third and support, again, coming in last place. Finally, one-night stands were for sex, participants agreed, with placeholder second, trial run third and social support last.

In the forced-choice questionnaire, the answers were similar, although booty call and friends-with-benefits both matched the placeholder function best.

"Individuals engage in these different relationships to serve different needs," Jonason told LiveScience.

Notably, men and people with more comfort with casual sex listed more functions for short-term relationships. This tendency to get a lot out of even casual relationships may facilitate short-term mating strategies, Jonason said.

One nebulous term that still lacks an official definition is "hooking up," which research shows can refer to anything from making out to sex in today's college environment.

Developers announce frustrated attempts to charge a phone or tablet with an upside-down cable will be over

The next USB cable will be reversible, its developers have announced.
This will mean users of the Universal Serial Bus cables will be able to plug the part into a device no matter which way it is facing, ending frustrated attempts to charge a phone or tablet with an upside-down cable.
The Type-C cable, due to be finalised by mid-2014 and on the market by 2016, will also be smaller in size so that it is similar to the current Micro USB plug.
It will also be able to conduct data speed transfers of up to 10 Gbps, double the speed possible at the moment.
Apple’s Lightning connector is reversible, and the new USB will follow in its footsteps.
At present USB cables can only be plugged into a device one way round for the data connection to work, but the Promoter Group announced will not be the case with the Type-C.
Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group chairman, said: “While USB technology is well established as the favoured choice for connecting and powering devices, we recognize the need to develop a new connector to meet evolving design trends in terms of size and usability.
“The new Type-C connector will fit well with the market’s direction and affords an opportunity to lay a foundation for future versions of USB.”
The different models of USB

The vice president of the Platform’s engineering group, Alex Peleg, added that the new model “will enable an entirely new super thin class of devices from phones to tablets, to 2-in-1s, to laptops to desktops and a multitude of other more specific usage devices.”
The Promoter Group is made up of Intel, HP, Microsoft, Renesas Electronics, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments, and agrees the design of the standard USB.

YotaPhone battery lasts 'up to 85 hours'

New dual-screen device has a battery life of more than 50 hours in reading mode, and 85 hours in flight mode

YotaPhone, the new dual-screen device from Russian start-up Yota, has a battery life of more than 50 hours in reading mode, and up to 85 hours when the phone is in flight mode, despite only having a 1800mAh battery.
At its launch event in Moscow yesterday, Yota chief executive Vlad Martynov said that the LCD screens used in most mobile phones use up a lot of power, meaning that they constantly have to go into sleep mode.
YotaPhone has an LCD screen, but also features a second e-ink screen on the back of the device, which uses very little power and is always on. This means that for certain applications like reading books and navigating using maps, users can switch to using the e-ink screen to extend battery life.
If course, it is unlikely that anyone using the Yotaphone would use the e-ink screen alone - the whole idea is to be able to quickly switch between the two. Martynov said that if the YotaPhone is used as a regular phone, the battery life will be equivalent to that of any other premium Android phone (although a number of premium Android devices now have 2100mAh batteries).
However, having the option to use the e-ink screen means that the device will inevitably last longer than equivalent Android devices.
"Yota certainly has a new approach to smartphones and they not only are trying to look different but to solve an issue many consumers have when it comes to managing battery life and constant notifications," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.
"The big question will be how much consumers are prepared to pay for that different approach and how much they will bet on a new name."
