New computer virus 'secretly leaks data' through air

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 06 Desember 2013 0 komentar

Security researchers have developed malware that can capture secret data from a computer and hijack the soundcard to broadcast it to a nearby machine as a high-frequency sound inaudible to humans

Security researchers have developed malware that can capture keystrokes from a computer and hijack the soundcard to broadcast the data to a nearby machine as a high-frequency sound which cannot be heard by humans.
In extremely high-security environments it is common practice to create an “air gap” between PCs containing sensitive information and others which are connected to the internet, in order to prevent remote malicious attacks. This research proves that it would be possible to use computer speakers and microphones to bridge this gap and send sensitive information back to a remote attacker, which authors warned was a “considerable threat to computer security”.
In the proof-of-concept attack from Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics, researchers were able to use the built-in speakers and microphones of computers to transmit passwords and other data at a rate of 20 bits per second over a distance of almost 20 metres, allowing the malware to “secretly leak critical data to the outside world”.
“If we want to exploit a rigorously hardened and tested type of computing system or networks of this type of computing system, we have to break new ground,” said the paper.
Speakers and microphones are often overlooked in security planning, and by using frequencies outside the range of human hearing it is likely that such messages could escape detection even when they are beamed across an office full of staff.
Cunningly, the paper does not stop at transmitting audio from one computer to another, but aims to infect as many PCs as possible and create a mesh network to enable multi-hop communication. In this way the victim’s machine and the computer which transmits data back to the attacker via the internet do not have to be within audible range of each other.
Researchers made use of an existing communication protocol designed for underwater communication as the relatively complex TCP/IP stacks used to transmit data over the internet have too large an overhead in terms of additional bits that are wrapped around the content. Because electromagnetic waves are highly absorbed by seawater it is common to send and receive data acoustically in underwater applications.
The experiment used five Lenovo T400 laptops running Debian 7.1, and was performed in a standard computer lab with no particularly unusual audio characteristics.
Transmissions were sent at around 20kHz and were found to be totally inaudible to humans during the experiment. The paper suggests that this frequency could be even higher, to make it even less likely to be detected, but that this would reduce the broadcast range.
During the experiment the researchers were able to covertly log the keystrokes made by a user at one computer and broadcast them over audio through a chain of other computers until the message was eventually passed to a machine connected to the internet, and sent back to a malicious attacker.
“Alongside keystroke information it would also be possible to forward other security critical data such as private encryption keys or small-sized text files with classified information from the infected victim to the covert network,” said researchers.
“This data could be sent out periodically to maximize the likelihood of data extraction from the host and it could also be spread to different environments when the computing system is carried around.”
“We have shown that the establishment of covert acoustical mesh networks in air is feasible in setups with commonly available business laptops.”
Examples of malware that can bridge air gaps have been found in the wild, such as Flame, which used Bluetooth to download contact information from nearby devices. Iran was first discovered in 2012 and seemed to disproportionately infect machines in Iran, leading to a story in The Washington Post claiming that it had been developed by the NSA and CIA in order to slow Iran's nuclear weapons research.

Next USB cable will be reversible

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 05 Desember 2013 0 komentar

Developers announce frustrated attempts to charge a phone or tablet with an upside-down cable will be over

The next USB cable will be reversible, its developers have announced.
This will mean users of the Universal Serial Bus cables will be able to plug the part into a device no matter which way it is facing, ending frustrated attempts to charge a phone or tablet with an upside-down cable.
The Type-C cable, due to be finalised by mid-2014 and on the market by 2016, will also be smaller in size so that it is similar to the current Micro USB plug.
It will also be able to conduct data speed transfers of up to 10 Gbps, double the speed possible at the moment.
Apple’s Lightning connector is reversible, and the new USB will follow in its footsteps.
At present USB cables can only be plugged into a device one way round for the data connection to work, but the Promoter Group announced will not be the case with the Type-C.
Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group chairman, said: “While USB technology is well established as the favoured choice for connecting and powering devices, we recognize the need to develop a new connector to meet evolving design trends in terms of size and usability.
“The new Type-C connector will fit well with the market’s direction and affords an opportunity to lay a foundation for future versions of USB.”
The different models of USB

The vice president of the Platform’s engineering group, Alex Peleg, added that the new model “will enable an entirely new super thin class of devices from phones to tablets, to 2-in-1s, to laptops to desktops and a multitude of other more specific usage devices.”
The Promoter Group is made up of Intel, HP, Microsoft, Renesas Electronics, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments, and agrees the design of the standard USB.

YotaPhone battery lasts 'up to 85 hours'

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

New dual-screen device has a battery life of more than 50 hours in reading mode, and 85 hours in flight mode

YotaPhone, the new dual-screen device from Russian start-up Yota, has a battery life of more than 50 hours in reading mode, and up to 85 hours when the phone is in flight mode, despite only having a 1800mAh battery.
At its launch event in Moscow yesterday, Yota chief executive Vlad Martynov said that the LCD screens used in most mobile phones use up a lot of power, meaning that they constantly have to go into sleep mode.
YotaPhone has an LCD screen, but also features a second e-ink screen on the back of the device, which uses very little power and is always on. This means that for certain applications like reading books and navigating using maps, users can switch to using the e-ink screen to extend battery life.
If course, it is unlikely that anyone using the Yotaphone would use the e-ink screen alone - the whole idea is to be able to quickly switch between the two. Martynov said that if the YotaPhone is used as a regular phone, the battery life will be equivalent to that of any other premium Android phone (although a number of premium Android devices now have 2100mAh batteries).
However, having the option to use the e-ink screen means that the device will inevitably last longer than equivalent Android devices.
"Yota certainly has a new approach to smartphones and they not only are trying to look different but to solve an issue many consumers have when it comes to managing battery life and constant notifications," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.
"The big question will be how much consumers are prepared to pay for that different approach and how much they will bet on a new name."

WhatsApp 'overtakes Facebook as leading mobile messaging service'

Posted by Unknown Senin, 02 Desember 2013 0 komentar

Report by On Device claims WhatsApp leads both Facebook and BBM

WhatsApp has overtaken Facebook as the leading social messaging service on mobile, according to a report.
A survey of nearly 4,000 smartphone users in five countries found that 44 per cent use WhatsApp at least once a week, whereas just 35 per cent use Facebook messenger.
The research by On Device also found that Snapchat’s largest source of users are 16 to 24-year-olds in the US; the same group which research has suggested is leaving Facebook.
The report also confirmed that social messaging apps – including WeChat, Twitter, BBM and Skype – are the dominant way in which people communicate on their phone.
It found that 86 per cent use social messaging daily, while 73 per cent use their phones for voice calls, 75 per cent use SMS messages, and 60 per cent use email.
The study was based on the response of 3,759 smartphone users in the US, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia and China, between October 25 and November 10 of this year.
In April, WhatsApp’s chief executive Jan Koum claimed that the service now has more users than Twitter and carries more messages than Facebook.
He said WhatsApp carries as many as 20 billion messages per day, double Facebook’s daily message traffic.
Koum said WhatsApp, based in Silicon Valley, will not follow Facebook and Twitter in carrying advertising, and will continue to charge a 99-cent annual subscription on Android and other smartphone operating systems.
“We do have a manifesto opposing advertising. We’re so bombarded with ads so much in our daily lives and we felt that smartphones aren’t the place for that. Our phones are so intimately connected to us, to our lives.”
In August WhatsApp, which is used by 300 million people worldwide every month, launched an update to offer voice messaging services.

4G connections 'will reach one billion by 2017'

Super-fast 4G mobile network will be available to half of world's population, study finds

There will be more one than billion mobile connections to the super-fast 4G network by 2017, according to research.

It is predicted that 4G will account for one in eight of the more than eight billion total mobile connections by 2017, up from 176 million 4G connections at the end of this year, the study by GSMA intelligence found.

Roughly 20 per cent of the global population is currently covered by 4G, and it is forecast that the network will be available to half of the world’s population by 2017.

It is also anticipated that by 2017 there will be nearly 500 4G networks in service across 128 countries, around double the number that are live today, as consumers’ transition from 3G to 4G moves at a much faster pace than the switch from 2G to 3G.

In the U.S. 4G is already available to nine in ten of the population, compared to just half in Europe and one in 10 in Asia.
Hyunmi Yang, chief strategy officer at GSMA, said the availability of 4G-enabled smartphones and better tariffs are contributing to the spread of the super-fast network.

She said: “Since the launch of the first commercial 4G-LTE networks in late 2009 we are seeing deployments accelerate across the globe.

“Mobile operators in both developed and developing markets are seeing LTE services contributing to a significant increase in ARPU (average revenue per user).”

This is in part explained by the fact that 4G customers use twice as much data as non-4G users, according to the analysts.

South Korea was found by GSMA to be the most advanced 4G market worldwide, with half of mobile phones running on the network, compared to just 20 per cent in Japan and the U.S.

The U.S. currently accounts for 46 per cent of global 4G connections, but the balance is expected to shift to Asia by 2017, which will account for 47 per cent of 4G connections.

The UK was relatively late in receiving 4G, with the network still only covering roughly 60 per cent of the population.

Mobile network EE rolled out 4G in 14 more towns across the UK, bringing the total number of towns and cities covered by 4GEE to 131.

The company is aiming for 98 per cent of the UK population to be covered by the end of 2014.

New 4GEE plans, starting from £18.99 per month, and 4GEE Extra plans that include international roaming and the UK’s largest data bundles, launched on October 30.

The average retail price of 4G smartphones in developed markets such as the U.S. is around $450 (£280), GSMA said.

Mobile and Wi-Fi overloaded by 2020, report claims

Real Wireless warns the UK will face a 'spectrum crunch' by 2020

The UK’s mobile and Wi-Fi networks will unable to cope with demand for data by 2020, a leading wireless consultancy firm has warned.

Real Wireless, who assisted in the auction of the 4G spectrum, warned that unless the UK’s mobile and Wi-Fi networks are upgraded by 2020, they will be unable to cope with increased usage.

This would mean there is not enough “spectrum” or space for mobile devices and computers to operate efficiently, causing problems for the country’s communication networks.

Real Wireless said that the UK will need 300MHz more mobile and 350MHz more Wi-Fi spectrum by 2020 if the network is to cope.

Professor Simon Saunders, the co-founder and technology director of Real Wireless, said: “Although new spectrum provided in the 4G auction has given some breathing space in meeting new demand growth, we will face a renewed spectrum crunch in around 2020 without further action.”
Earlier this month communications regulator Ofcom announced it has identified a number of new spectrum bands as potential candidates for future mobile broadband, as it looks ahead to the provision of 5G.

This includes spectrum in bands currently owned by the Ministry of Defence – the 2.3 and 3.4 GHz bands – spectrum in the 700 MHz band, used for terrestrial TV, and so-called ‘white spaces’ that sit in the frequency band used for digital terrestrial TV.

The Government is currently considering plans to release up to 100 MHz of spectrum in the 2.7 GHz band, along with additional spectrum in the 3.6 GHz band, which is used for satellite links.

The spectrum identified is equivalent to approximately seven times the amount of spectrum released as part of the 4G auction, Ofcom said.

Ofcom anticipates the introduction of 5G, as well as advancements in mobile technology, could boost mobile data capacity by more than 25 times by 2030.

But Real Wireless today warned the UK could have insufficient mobile and Wi-Fi capacity by 2020.

Professor Saunders added: “The challenge faced by governments and regulators is how best to manage this demand and ensure that consumers and other wireless users continue to see an improvement in their service, while ensuring other critical services still have access to the spectrum they need.”

Google Chrome gets voice search update

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 27 November 2013 0 komentar

Extension to Google Chrome enables hands-free searching from google.com

Google has added an “always-on” voice search for computer users on its Chrome browser in an update released on Tuesday.
The extension to Google Chrome enables hands-free searching from google.com, with users saying “OK Google” followed by their search term.
The service for desktop operates in the same way as it does on Google’s Nexus 5 smartphones, as well as a whole host of other mobile devices.
When users want to do another search, they simply say “OK Google” followed by their next desired search term. The feature is available for both desktops and laptops.
It comes after the release of Google’s Android 4.4 Kitkat operating system at the end of last month, in which always-on was given much more prominence.
The always-listening feature was first introduced on the company’s smart glasses, Google Glass, which is activated by the phrase “OK Glass”.
The Moto X, released in August outside of the UK, was Motorola’s first phone since it was bought by Google, and also has a microphone permanently listening for the words “OK Google Now,” which allow a user to wake the device up from sleep and then to search the web or use Google's Now service.
On releasing the phone, Google said: “Moto X is ready when you are. It responds to your voice - no touching necessary. With Touchless Control you can check the weather, get directions, or do just about anything without lifting a finger.”
A similar service is now available to users of Google Chrome on desktop PCs or laptops.
In May Google suggested that computers of the future will understand natural language and will be able to speak back to us.
Writing on the Google blog, Amit Singhal explained: “Soon, you’ll be able to just say, hands-free, “OK Google, will it be sunny in Santa Cruz this weekend?” and get a spoken answer.
“Then, you’ll be able to continue the conversation and just follow up with “how far is it from here?” if you care about the drive or “how about Monterey?” if you want to check weather somewhere else, and get Google to tell you the answer.”
He went on: “People communicate with each other by conversation, not by typing keywords -- and we’ve been hard at work to make Google understand and answer your questions more like people do.
“Already, you can tap a mic, talk to Google in a more natural way and get responses spoken back to you on Android, iPhone, and iPad devices.”

Pebble smartwatch gets banking app

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 19 November 2013 0 komentar

Users will be able to check their balance with 'a glance of the wrist'

The Pebble smartwatch now has a banking app, which lets users check their balance and recent transactions with “a glance of the wrist”.
British firm Intelligent Environments are behind the app, which can be accessed without a smartphone or opening a web browser.
The company says it has plans to develop the app for other wearable technologies, such as Google Glass.
Pebble smartwatch secured a record $10.2 million investment using Kickstarter last year, and revealed in July that it had received about 275,000 pre-orders for its device.
Intelligent Environments say they are in discussions with a number of different banks who are apparently interested in offering the service to their customers.
30 years since customers of the Nottingham Building Society were able to access banking via the Prestel videotext system, the company said customers “like to know their account balance in real time”.
Clayton Locke, Intelligent Systems chief technology officer, said: “We develop our software by first finding out what customers really want in a digital bank.
“Our research shows that people like to know their account balance in real time.
“Plus customers are increasingly curious about how wearable devices, such as smartwatches, can be used to manage everyday tasks such as banking.”
The company said that the Interact smartwatch app means customers will be able to check their bank balance with “a glance of the wrist… while out and about”.
"The Interact smartwatch app marks our first step towards developing digital banking systems for other wearable technologies, such as Google Glass."

YotaPhone dual-screen smartphone 'to launch before Christmas'

Posted by Unknown Senin, 18 November 2013 0 komentar

YotaPhone, the dual-screen mobile device that made a splash at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, will reportedly launch internationally before Christmas.

The YotaPhone has an 4.3-inch HD LCD display on the front and an e-ink display on the back. The idea is that you can use the colour LCD display like a normal Android phone, and receive notifications, read news or send maps to the rear e-paper display to save battery.
The YotaPhone is made by Russian smartphone manufacturer Yota, which also provides mobile broadband services in the country. The YotaPhone won the CNET Best of CES Award for 'Hottest Mobile Device' at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show.
At the time, the device featured 4G LTE, Android 4.1, a 4.3-inch 1280p HD display, a 12-megapixel camera, and a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus (MSM8960) chip. However, it is likely that at least some of these specs will be updated ahead of the launch, which TechCrunch reports will be before Christmas.
The YotaPhone is not the first dual-screen smartphone – earlier this year Samsung launched ‘the Hennessy’, a dual-screen flip phone with a touch-screen on both the outer and inner surfaces. However, it is the first to combine an LCD screen with an e-ink display.
Yota Devices chief executive Vlad Martynov claims that the YotaPhone represents "a whole new archetype in smartphones". As well as saving battery, the e-ink display also provides a more comfortable reading experience and lets users view notifications without having to activate their phone.
Reports in the Russian press suggest that the YotaPhone will ship with a price tag of 20,000 rubles (roughly £380), but the company has so far made no announcements on pricing.

Samsung 'plans Galaxy phone with wrap-around display'

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 17 November 2013 0 komentar

Samsung is reportedly planning to release a Galaxy smartphone next year with a three-sided display that wraps around the edges of the device.

The phone will use an upgraded version of Samsung’s technology called Youm, currently featured in the curved Galaxy Round handset, two people familiar with the plans told Bloomberg.
The idea is that the user will be able to read messages from an angle. However, Samsung plans to have each side of the display operate independently, according to the report.
Samsung does not have a specific release date for the new device, but one person said the handset is likely to come out during the second half of next year.
Samsung unveiled a prototype of its Youm flexible display technology at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Youm uses OLED display technology, and is designed to bring out better colours and contrast with an extremely thin form factor.
Brian Berkeley, the senior vice president of Samsung's display lab, showed off a prototype of a phone with a Youm display bent around the sides at CES. He said the technology will let the company's partners make bendable, rollable, and foldable displays
Then in October Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Round. Billed as the world's first curved screen smartphone, the device features a flexible 5.7-inch high definition display and is designed to allow users to check the information such as the date, time, battery life and missed calls more easily while the home screen is off.
The global flexible display industry is predicted to grow rapidly in the next few years. Research firm IHS Display estimates the market will be worth $1.5 billion (£900 million) by 2016 and more than $10 billion by 2019.
LG Electronics has also unveiled a curved smartphone called G Flex. The vertically curved design of its G Flex smartphone is optimised for the average face, to deliver improved voice and sound quality, according to LG.

BlackBerry's messenger service receives upgrades for Android and iOS platforms

BlackBerry has announced a series of updates for its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service for iPhone and Android platforms that will be rolled out Friday, 15th November 2013.
BBM, which was downloaded more than 20 millions time in the week after its re-launch in October, has been upgraded to fix a series of glitches, as well to add new features.
For iOS, BBM will now support iPod and iPad devices, and an issue where some users would be missing BBM contact names has now been fixed, according to the company.
Some issues with language support have also been remedied.
For both platforms BlackBerry have launched a ‘tell your friends’ feature to help you connect using BBM’s sharing tools.
You will also be able to invite BBM contacts to BBM Groups by email, even if you do not know their PIN.
Specifically for Android, BlackBerry say they have addressed an issue where some users were experiencing very high battery use, as well as creating BBM contact categories.
BBM used to be exclusive to BlackBerry smartphones, but is now available as a free download in Google Play and the App Store.
Android smartphones must be running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean (Android 4.x) and iPhones must be running iOS 6 and iOS 7.
Android and iPhone users who download the BBM app can carry out both one-on-one and group text chats, and share files such as photos and voice notes instantly.
Using the ‘Broadcast Message’ function they can also send messages to all of their BBM contacts in one go.
BBM is widely recognised as BlackBerry’s most prized asset apart from its corporate email, but its 80 million users are less than half the 200 million people who use WhatsApp across platforms.
Upon re-launching the service, Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President of BBM, said: “It is great to see so many people downloading BBM, but the true measurement for us is engagement – the connections being made and the conversations in which our BBM community engages.
"The power of BBM has always been the active, real conversations and interaction that our customers enjoy.
“From here on out, we will focus on active users of BBM and will no longer focus on simple download numbers.”

Microsoft software has a vulnerability that hackers can exploit to attack users and gain remote control of their devices

Microsoft has warned users they could be attacked by hackers exploiting a "vulnerability" in its software.
Attackers could exploit the vulnerability to allow remote code execution, giving them the same user rights as the current user.
Microsoft said it is "aware of targeted attacks that attempt to exploit this vulnerability in Microsoft Office products," in a statement today.
The software vulnerability is in the Microsoft Graphics component that affects Microsoft Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Microsoft Office 2003 - 2010, and Microsoft Lync.
The current versions of Windows XP, 8, 8.1 and RT are not affected by the issue which centres on graphic components that handle specially crafted TIFF images.
Attackers could exploit the vulnerability by convinving users to open specially crafted emails, attachments or web content.
Users who have full administrative user rights on their Microsoft systems are more at risk than users whose accounts are configured to have less rights on the system.
Microsoft is investigating the flaw and said: "Upon completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to help protect our customers.
"This may include providing a security update through our monthly release process or providing an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customer needs."
In a blog post, Dustin Childs, a response communications manager, said the attacks are largely taking place in the Middle East and South Asia.
He advised users to apply the Microsoft Fix it solution and Disable the TIFF Codec that prevents exploitation of the issue.
He also suggested they deploy the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit which helps prevent exploitation by providing mitigations to protect against the vulnerability.
"As a best practice, we always encourage customers to follow the Protect Your Computer guidance of enabling a firewall, applying all software updates and installing anti-virus and anti-spyware software," he said.
"We also encourage customers to exercise caution when visiting websites and avoid clicking suspicious links or opening email messages from unfamiliar senders."

'Google's Android KitKat targets cheaper smartphones'

Android 4.4 KitKat is catered towards wearable devices and cheaper phones, a source says

Android 4.4 KitKat could be Google's latest attempt to make Android devices cheaper, according to leaked documents.

Google wants its new software to work well on low-end phones in addition to the more expensive Samsung Galaxy and HTC devices, according to blogger Amir Efrati who said he has seen confidential Google documents.

Efrati said the key improvement will be better memory management to allow "entry-level devices" to run with just 512MB of RAM.

Currently less than half of Android devices are running the latest version of the operating system which creates problems for app developers who rely on users having updated features.

The company also reportedly wants to improve the operating software to make it suitable for wearable computing.

The new version could include support for three new sensors: geomagnetic rotation vector, step detection and step counters, which could be Android's way of answering Apple's inclusion of a dedicated motion processor in its latest iPhone.

Efrati added that the update could also include power saving options with both sensor and WiFi batching to help improve battery life.

He also claimed the KitKat will include native support for a smartphone to become an infrared remote control, and to emulate payment cards that use near-field communication.

He said: "Google wants your Android device to be a remote control. The next version of Android lets developers build apps that control TVs, tuners, switches and other devices by sending infrared signals."

Shoto photo app launches on Android and iOS

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 30 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

Shoto app lets you automatically share smartphone photos with friends

A new app is launching in the UK today that uses a combination of location and phonebook details to automatically create albums of all the photos taken together by a group of friends at a given place and time.
Known as Shoto, the aim of the app is to solve the problem of never getting to see the photos that other people have taken an event, like a wedding or a office party. However, it also includes privacy controls that let the user select which people at the event get to see their pictures.
When the user downloads Shoto, all of the photos on their phone are automatically organised into albums and backed-up in the cloud. Shoto looks at the user’s phonebook and the geotags on their photos and matches these albums with those from friends that were also present in the same location at the same time.
For example, if a group of friends all download Shoto, they will instantly have access to each other’s photos from an event they all attended together. However, this would only be the case if all of the people in the group had the other members saved in their phonebook.
If the user wants to share a photo album with someone who was not there – for example, an aunt who couldn't make it to her niece's wedding – Shoto allows the user to send an album with a note. However, when the album is shared, only the photos taken by the sender will show up.
“Shoto works out which of your real friends are with you, and automatically brings together your and their photos into a single set of smart albums, so that you can enjoy memories without having to nag, be nagged and without looking at your photos in a piecemeal manner.” says Sachin Dev Duggal, co-founder and 'chief wizard' at Shoto.
“We are entering a world of new dimensions and context; private is the new social, people want to have intimate conversations about real memories with their real friends. Shoto does exactly this – no manual process, no setup, just unparalleled ease and control.”
Users can control what others see by selecting “me,” “friends there,” or “world” using an simple circle gesture. This can be set at an app, album or photo level and control is instant, meaning that as the privacy setting are changed, photos appear or disappear from other people's phones.
The app includes machine-learning algorithms that build up an understanding of the user based on their historical photo-taking behaviour. Duggal has big plans to build on this intelligence to offer new services such as restaurant recommendations as the app develops.
Shoto was launched today at the Dublin Web Summit and is now available, for free, in the Apple App Store and via Google Play.

BBM for Android and iOS hits 10m downloads in 24 hours

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 23 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

BlackBerry has announced that its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) apps for Android and iOS have already been downloaded over 10 million times.

BlackBerry re-launched the Android and iOS apps yesterday, after problems with a rogue version of the Android app forced BlackBerry to suspend the rollout for almost a month.
Despite this initial huccup, however, BlackBerry claims that yesterday was one of the best single-day openings for a mobile app ever.
BBM quickly rose through the rankings on the App Store to become the number one free app in more than 75 countries in the first 24 hours, including the US, Canada, the UK, Indonesia and most of the Middle East, according to BlackBerry.
User ratings in both the App Store and Google Play are also overwhelmingly positive, earning BBM 60,000 five-star reviews on Google Play from about 87,000 reviews.
“The mobile messaging market is full of opportunity for BBM,” said Andrew Bocking, Executive Vice President, BBM at BlackBerry. "We intend to be the leading private social network for everyone who needs the immediate communication and collaboration of instant messaging combined with the privacy, control and reliability delivered through BBM."
Previously exclusive to BlackBerry smartphones, BBM is now available as a free download in Google Play and the App Store. Android smartphones must be running Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean (Android 4.x) and iPhones must be running iOS 6 and iOS 7. Customers can download BBM by visiting www.BBM.com from their smartphone browser.
Android and iPhone users who download the BBM app will be able to carry out both one-on-one and group text chats, and share files such as photos and voice notes instantly. They will also be able to send a message to all of their BBM contacts in one go using the 'Broadcast Message' function.
BBM is widely perceived as BlackBerry’s most valuable asset aside from its corporate email, BlackBerry Enterprise Server. However, its 60m users are already dwarved by the 200m people who use the WhatsApp service, which currently works across platforms, and has replaced text messages for many of its young users.
Last week it emerged that micro-blogging site Twitter is also planning to launch a standalone direct-messaging application to rival popular apps such as WhatsApp and BBM.
The move is part of a broader revamp of Twitter's direct-messaging product, which also includes the addition of a new setting that allows users to send and receive direct messages from others without needing to mutually follow one another, according to AllThingsD.

Instagram Finally Coming To Windows Phone, Nokia Confirms

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 22 Oktober 2013 0 komentar
It’s taken a lot longer than Nokia hoped it would but Windows Phone is finally getting an official Instagram client. The photo-sharing social network, which has north of 150 million monthly active users, has been on iOS some three years, and on Android since April 2012. Now it’s coming to Windows Phone within “weeks”, according to Nokia.

The news was confirmed by Windows Phone’s foremost OEM at its own conference, Nokia World, taking place in Abu Dhabi today. Nokia’s devices division is of course also in the process of being acquired by Microsoft.

According to the Verge, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom has also confirmed the app is on the way. “Our ultimate goal is to bring Instagram to everyone who wants to use it,” he said. “We’re looking forward to watching the Windows Phone community use Instagram to capture and share beautiful moments in the coming weeks.”

Neither Systrom nor Nokia provided further details about exactly what features the Windows Phone Instagram app will include.

The arrival of Instagram fills the biggest app gap in Windows Phone, and symbolically at least cements its position as the third choice mobile platform — for app developers to address (and consumers to adopt). Windows Phone remains a very far distant third in the smartphone OS rankings, however. Analyst IDC pegged its global smartphone OS share at just 3.7% in the second quarter of this year, vs 13.2% for iOS and 79.3% for Android.

Establishing a third ecosystem was the original stated intention of Nokia and Microsoft when they kicked off their Windows Phone partnership back in February 2011. The price of throwing its lot in with Microsoft has been a high one for Nokia, which has been forced to divest itself of its loss-making mobile phone making division and sell it to Microsoft. That acquisition is due to close at the start of next year, pending all the necessary approvals.

In recent times Nokia has tried its best to fill the Instagram-sized hole in the Windows Phone platform — with alternatives like Oggl from Hipstamatic. Asked about the continued lack of Instagram back in May, Nokia’s Jo Harlow told TechCrunch: ”Obviously our goal is to brings great apps to the Windows Phone platform. We have a huge amount of respect for Instagram and we continue to work in that direction and in particular with Microsoft, and with apps like Hipstamatic and the ability to share your pictures on Instagram.”

The lack of Instagram has been a particular pain for Nokia as camera hardware has been one of the focuses of its Lumia devices — most recently with the launch of the 41MP-packing Lumia 1020. Tellingly that’s also the device Nokia has chosen to picture in the above tweet. Expect the company to make much marketing hay out of the combination of Instagram and its 41MP cameraphone. At least until it hands the reins over to Microsoft.

New iPad 5: top 10 features to hope for

Posted by Unknown Senin, 21 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

With Apple set to launch its iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 tomorrow, Radhika Sanghani lists the top 10 features consumers can hope for in the company's latest tablets.

1. Fingerprints

The iPhone 5S has been hugely popular because of its fingerprint sensor software on the home page which allows the user to unlock their phone with their finger. Apple could use the same Touch ID fingerprint recognition on their latest iPads.

2. Higher retina display

The iPad 4 already has a good quality retina display, but the iPad Mini does not so this would be a welcome improvement. The retina display is so detailed that the human eye cannot identify individual pixels, and the pressure is on for Apple as Google launched an updated version of its Nexus 7 tablet earlier this year, featuring an impressive 323ppi screen.

3. Flip cover

The original iPad flip cover was perfect in its simplicity as it folded up to create a stand for the iPad to rest on. But, it was so simple that Apple can expand on it and make it an even more attractive accessory - perhaps making it easier to use for commuters sitting down and holding it on their laps.

4. Keyboard

The latest Microsoft Surface tablet has a thin keyboard in its cover so users don't have to tap on the screen. Currently, iPads do not have traditional keyboards although they can be bought as additional accessories. Their latest designs could mimic Microsoft and feature inbuilt track pads.

5. Lighter

iPads are already designed to be easily portable but an even lighter and thinner Pad would be well-received. Rumour has it the new design is more squared-off than previous models, but is the design going to be easier to carrier? We hope so.

6. Faster

A faster processor would bring the iPad up to the performance of laptops and desktop computers. Hopefully the iPad 5 will use the powerful 64-bit A7X chip and have increased memory.

7. Battery life

With all its hoped-for new features, the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 will need longer battery lives to avoid owners having to carry around chargers.

8. New covers

The new iPads are rumoured to come in a range of colours, following the iPhone 5C, but this would mean the current covers would not match. A new range of fun, fabric covers with smart displays would be a good addition.

9. Camera

iOS7 software brought new additions to Apple cameras, such as a range of filters, but these were unavailable on the iPad. An update of this would work well, along with a more powerful camera with better zoom functions.

10. Lower cost

This is an unlikely feature of both the new iPads, but one that would please millions of consumers. Instead, it is likely that prices will be in line with previous models, which would put a 16GB iPad 5 at $499 (£280) and could mean a 128GB iPad 5 with 4G LTE would cost $929 (£574).

'Google smartwatch' could launch to rival Samsung and Apple

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 18 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

Google is rumoured to be close to releasing a smartwatch, making it the third major company to be linked with the latest tech device.

South Korean giant Samsung already launched its Galaxy Gear smartwatch last month, and Apple is thought to be producing an iWatch which could be released next year.
Google could announce their smartwatch alongside the launch of their Android mobile operating KitKat system, according to 9to5Google.
It is believed the Nexus watch will be codenamed Gem, and announced on October 31.
Google Now functionality is reportedly at the centre of the product and, if used, would enable the user to link their watch to their smartphone.
Information such as calendar alarms, emails and text messages could all be pushed to the watch’s display.
Samsung’s Galaxy Gear uses Google's Android operating system and acts primarily as a notification system, offering users previews of text messages and emails, and a way of controlling music playing from larger devices.
It also includes a low–resolution camera and voice recognition, allowing users to dictate emails and messages.
It can also make phone calls, count users steps – and tell the time.
Apple's iWatch is believed to be launched in the second half of 2014, and though it has not indicated whether it is working on a smartwatch, in July the company filed an application to register "iWatch" as a trademark in Japan, under product category for a computer or watch device.
In May, Apple CEO Tim Cook did not rule out the possibility of Apple developing a wearable product when he spoke at AllThingsD conference.
He said: "It's an area that's ripe for exploration, it's ripe for us to get excited about. Lots of companies will play in this space."
