ASUU 150 days (5 Months) Strike

ASUU nationwide strike has “inflicted unnecessary damage” to Nigeria and its students: needless to say it has damaged education’s credibility around the world.

Efforts to reopen universities to students under the 5 months strike has been fruitless. Deliberations upon deliberations, finger-pointing and blame game between ASUU vs its members, Government vs ASUU and Students vs ASUU plus Government has taken the toil to 150 days.

The Nigerian people are completely fed up with ASUU and the Federal government of Nigeria. In a time like this when our economy is strong, we have allowed education to suffer so badly due to yet another self-inflicted crisis that set our country back.

Osas eye wrote last month on ASUU Strike, FOUR MONTHS AFTER: Where does it go from here? but today, this article is about a five month strike out of a 12 month calender year: Unbelievable leadership, Shameful for a country with so much wealth at its disposal. Our students deserved better! Nigeria deserves more than this chronic ongoing ASUU strike.

How it all started?

July 1, 2013: ASUU began a nationwide strike over alleged Federal Government’s refusal to implement the agreement between it and the union over unpaid entitlements.

August 6: The Federal Government team led by Benue State Governor, Dr. Gabriel Suswam had a failed meeting with ASUU officials at the office of the SGF as the teachers insisted on the implementation of the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement.

August 18: Meeting between striking university lecturers and the Federal Government ended without a resolution of the crisis.

August 20: Jonathan met with the Federal Government’s officials engaged in the negotiation with ASUU at the Presidential Villa, decided to lead another negotiation with the leadership of the union.

August 20: FG approves N400 billion for infrastructural development in Nigerian universities.

Aug 20: ASUU threatened to pull out from the Presidential Committee on the Implementation of the Committee of Needs Assessment of Nigeria public Universities, CNANU.

August 23: The Federal Government reached agreement with ASUU to deploy N100 billion for the provision of infrastructure on campuses of 61 universities covered in the needs assessment .

August 28: National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) issued a one-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the union’s leadership to resolve their differences or face serious consequences.

October 24: Senate mandated its leadership to wade into ASUU strike by meeting the Federal Government and the ASUU executives

November 4: Senate President, Senator David Mark met with the leadership of ASUU, but no resolution to end strike.

November 5: President Goodluck Jonathan in 13-hour marathon meeting with the leadership of ASUU in conjunction with representatives of the NLC and TUC.

November 12: Prof. Festus Iyayi, former ASUU President died on his way for ASUU meeting in Kano.

November 23: ASUU NEC members agreed that before calling off its strike government should pay the four-month salary arrears being owed varsity lecturers.

November 26: Management of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki resolved to reopen the school after ASUU fails to call off strike.

November 26: Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities called for the immediate re-opening of all shut down universities across the country.

November 28: Federal Government gives ASUU ultimatum to call off strike in one week or face expulsion.

UPDATED:ASUU Postpones Executive Meeting Over Iyayi's Death

A former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Festus Iyayi, died on Tuesday in a car crash on Lokoja-Abuja Expressway.

Iyayi was returning from a meeting in one of the Northern ASUU chapters when the accident occurred.

He was in company with some ASUU leaders and they were said to be
returning from Kano where they sought the views of members on ending the
four-month-old ASUU strike.

Daily Times could not confirm the total number of casualties in the crash.

However, his death has led to the postment of ASUU's executive meeting, which was to have met Wednesday to decide whether they should call of their four-month old strike.

According to Dele Momodu's tweet ASUU will assemble on the 15th of January for another meeting, so unfortunate and we hope another member doesn't kick the bucket, or else it will be rescheduled for December of that same year

Jonathan, pilgrims pray for peace, end to ASUU crisis

EMOTIONS filled Jerusalem International Conference Centre on Sunday as President Goodluck Jonathan led thousands of pilgrims in an interdenominational church service which recorded a number of miraculous healings to pray for peace and development in Nigeria.

Tagged: A Day With Jesus For Nigeria in Israel, the service was used to ask God for forgiveness of sins committed in Nigeria.

The Centre was jammed and the service which lasted for five hours was attended by cabinet ministers and some state governors which include those of Plateau (Jonah Jang), Ebonyi (Martin Elechi), Akwa Ibom (Godswill Akpabio), Cross River (Liyel Imoke), Benue (Gabriel Suswan) and Delta (Emmanuel Uduaghan). Some deputy governors were also in attendance.

Notable religious leaders were equally present. They were led by the president of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor.

The General Overseer of Dunamis International Ministry, Dr. Paul Enenche who took his text from Psalm 122 and Genesis 12: 1-3. His sermon centred on Experiencing His Lordship ministered during the service.

He noted that no man or nation has a future without God, stating that the devil did not have the powers to stop the kind of unusual transformation coming to the country.

Maintaining that it was not possible to put God first and come last in life, Pastor Enenche noted that decision to accept personal helplessness and willingness to submit to God’s authority were keys to Godly leadership.

He said, “If we are to move forward, we must take risks. Those who fear reactions will never take actions.”

According to him, Israelis constitute only 0.2 percent of world’s population yet one-fifth of Nobel-award recipients till date have been Jews.

He attributed the successes, security, growth and development in Israel to submission to leadership of God.

Speaking, President Jonathan who took the second scripture reading from Philipians 2:1-11 noted that though the country was passing through some challenges, God made it possible for the pilgrims to storm Israel to pray.

The president, who equally received Yzak Rabin Leadership Award of Excellence stated that Nigerians had learnt from the history of Israel that all human race must face challenges and called for further prayers for the country.

He assured that his administration would work tirelessly to build the kind of nation that coming generation will be proud of.

President Jonathan outlined achievements made so far by his administration but lamented that some people, out of evil thinking, go as far as falling power towers and blowing up gas lines.

Assuring that the country would overcome the challenges, the president emphasized that, “The evil forces will never succeed again.”

He said, “We assure you things will continue to be better. We believe that this is turning point in our country and Nigeria will not be the same.

“Nigeria and Israel will continue to be great friends and the two countries will give us a better world. We know that the world will see peace as we progress,” he said.

session, Pastor Oritsejafor described Nigeria as one that had come out of wilderness and shall never return to same.

He said God would spoil, trouble and empty those that spoil, trouble and empty the country.

“You spirit behind Boko Haram, you hide under human faces but you are a demon, you are an evil spirit.

In the name of Jesus, I address you today, your time is up. I command you, leave the geographical entity called Nigeria; go to dry places in the name of Jesus. Leave Nigeria alone; you won’t return to Nigeria.

“Boko Haram is ended today. I address wicked men and women engineering political confusion in Nigeria, whether doing it in covens, waters or houses of conspirators, in the name of Jesus, your enterprise will not continue.

“We take Nigeria from your hand. We speak peace to Nigeria, we speak peace, love, growth and unity to Nigeria.

“Jonathan, mount up with wings like the eagle, fly above the storm. Nigeria will not fail or fall in your hands,” he prayed.

Prayer to end ASUU strike
Thousands of Nigerian pilgrims on Sunday in Jerusalem prayed against the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), alleging that there are powers behind the industrial action that needed to be broken.

The prayers were directed against the leadership of the union for them to accept the offer already made by the federal government.

ASUU had insisted on full implementation of the agreement it had with the federal government in 2009 even after government reportedly increased the Earned Allowances from N30 billion to N40 billion although as first installment and not a once-and-for-all payment and with a pledge to jerk it up with further releases once universities were through with the disbursement of the sum.
