Sir Alex Ferguson retires from football at the end of the season. Ferguson's era comes to an end. The Manchester United manager, will retire at the end of this season after 26 years in office, announced today the club through their website.

"I've thought a lot about the decision to leave and I have not taken it lightly. It's the right time," said the coach, 71 years.

Alex Ferguson will vacate his post after the game against West Bromwich Albion on 19 May. The club did not take any decision on his replacement, although it emerged that David Moyes , Everton coach, and Jose Mourinho , in charge of Real Madrid are favorites to replace him.

    Nigeria ranks second worldwide in countries with the most newborn deaths. Nearly two-thirds of all newborn deaths occur in just 10 countries. That is 2 million out of 3 million each year. Many of these countries have very large populations (such as India and Nigeria) and others have high percentages of newborns dying (Afghanistan, DR Congo, Ethiopia and Nigeria also).

    Islamists attack in Nigeria leaves 55 dead

    Islamist insurgents effected coordinated attacks on Tuesday against a city in northeastern Nigeria, leaving 55 dead. the attacks is said to have lasted about five hours between military and Boko Haram extremists.
    According to the military spokesman Sagir Musa, "heavily armed terrorists from the Boko Haram" launched attacks at around 5:00 a.m. local against army barracks, police stations and prisons.

    "In these attacks, 55 people were killed, including two soldiers, jailers, policemen and civilians," said the spokesman in Maiduguri, a stronghold of the Islamist group Boko Haram located 67 km Bama.

    "Some armed men attacked the barracks, but were repulsed. Ten of them were killed and two were arrested. But others entered the prison, freeing 105 inmates, killing the guards, except for those who managed to hide," he said.

    Nigeria: Man Sentenced to Prison for Raping a minor

    A Nigerian man was sentenced to ten years in prison for rape in Osun State. An Osogbo Magistrate’s Court sentenced the 34-year old man, Nurudeen Olanbeloye, to 10 years imprisonment for raping a girl 11 (name withheld). The court found him guilty on two counts for unlawful and forceful penetration of a minor. He was sentenced accordingly to five years each which are to run concurrently.

    It is one of the rare victory cases in Nigeria and the court system. The incident happened at Sagba’s compound in Ikire town on April 24, 2013 when the girl came to Olanbeloye's house to collect money for the items sold to his wife.

    The police prosecutor said the criminal offence committed by Olanbeloye was punishable under Section 218 and 31(2) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State, and also a punishable offence under Child’s Right Law of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003 and 2007.

    Nigeria's nurses want more government aid

    Nigeria Nurses and Midwives wants more government aids to help pregnant women in rural. In a shocking interview with one of the midwives, women in rural areas often deliver their babies in darkness or occasionally with a flash light.

    Deborah Ezra, a member of the Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, lamented the poor conditions and confirmed how she handled deliveries using the weak light of a mobile phone.

    Mrs. Ezra called on government at all levels to invest in midwives as a frontline to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health.

    Nigeria currently has one of the highest cases of maternal mortality in the world with about 142 deaths daily.

    The Minister of Health, Mohammed Pate, as always, said his ministry will do all it can “to ensure that the quality of health care is improved in the country”.

    He called on midwives in the country to have passion for the job they do.

    Nigerians are calling for Mr. Pate and the government to please do their job and make these passionate nurses and midwives enjoy the services they render.
